If you already own a 7800X3D
The upgrade case is much harder than the new-build case. At higher resolutions with a GPU limit, the visible difference can shrink; a GPU upgrade may change the experience more.
If you are building from scratch
The 9800X3D gives you the newer Zen 5 X3D platform option and AMD lists support across modern AM5 chipsets. Whether it is worth the premium still depends on current CPU pricing and what GPU tier you can afford after the CPU purchase.
Resolution changes the value
1080p extreme-refresh gaming exposes CPU differences more readily. At 4K, the GPU is more often the limiting component. A CPU comparison without resolution context is incomplete.
The BuildPilot rule
Choose the cheaper CPU when the savings move the GPU or another bottleneck enough to matter. Choose the faster CPU when you are already at the desired GPU tier and high-refresh CPU headroom is the goal.
