Gaming-first vs mixed workload
AMD positions the 9800X3D around gaming with 2nd-gen 3D V-Cache. Intel’s 265K combines 8 P-cores and 12 E-cores, which can make it attractive when the PC must also handle heavily threaded work.
Platform cost is part of CPU cost
AM5 and LGA1851 require different motherboards. Compare CPU + board + memory + cooling, not the CPU sticker price alone.
Power planning
Intel lists 125 W processor base power and up to 250 W maximum turbo power for the 265K. AMD lists 120 W default TDP for the 9800X3D. Real system behavior depends on board settings and workload.
Who should buy what
For a gaming-first build, prioritize gaming behavior at your target refresh and GPU tier. For a mixed gaming/productivity workstation, test whether the extra multicore resources change your non-gaming work enough to justify the platform choice.
